we believe that having good animal welfare standards is an important part of our business. it is our responsibility to work with suppliers who are also committed to the highest sustainability standards with a focus on constantly looking at ways of improving best practices
all beef, chicken and pork supplied to wagamama must meet strict EU legislation and adhere to the principles of the farm animal welfare council (fawc) five freedoms for animal welfare
here at wagamama we have an unwavering commitment to animal welfare, including getting to 100% cage free eggs across both our company operated businesses and our franchised businesses
while we are wholeheartedly committed to this goal, we recognise that some regions, particularly in asia and the middle east, face additional challenges in doing so due to complex supply chains. we are actively collaborating with partners in these markets to expedite progress and aim for full compliance as soon as possible
current status of our global initiatives
uk and ireland | we achieved 100% free-range status for all shell eggs, liquid eggs, and egg by-products in 2022
usa | we’re on track to meet cage-free standards by the end of 2024
europe | we are 100% cage-free for shell eggs in most markets and are working towards full compliance in all egg categories by the end of 2025
asia & middle east | while we are still committed to achieving 100% cage-free eggs by the end of 2025, we face unique challenges in some of these markets, which may in turn jeopardise this deadline
we want to assure you that we are working extremely hard to fulfil our commitment in all global markets. we will provide an update on our progress, including compliance percentages for each market, by the end of 2024 and we will continue to share annual updates thereafter until we fully achieve our commitment
sustainability is at the heart of everything we do at wagamama, including how we select, source from and work with our suppliers, which is why all salmon on our menu is sustainably sourced from scottish and norwegian fisheries that operate to the highest standards and do not use feed from west africa
each of the fisheries we source from share our commitment to sustainability and are accredited by GlobalG.A.P. the world’s leading standards for seafood farmed with care. these organisations set strict requirements for responsible seafood farming that require producers to farm with care for fish, the environment and the people on and around the farm
as a responsible brand we regularly ensure that all our suppliers adhere to wagamama’s strict sourcing requirements, we also make sure the highest standards are maintained by conducting routine audits and site visits to verify compliance, traceability and transparency
as part of our desire to source ingredients from the uk where feasible, we have taken the decision to switch the sourcing of all our salmon to scottish fisheries by the end of this year. these fisheries also have the additional benefit of being RSPCA accredited
at wagamama we live by the japanese philosophy ‘kaizen’ which means ‘continual improvement’. it inspires us to do better in all that we do, to make small positive choices every day for big change. continual improvement is paramount as we look to constantly expand our sustainability goals and achievements. the part we must play as a brand is extremely important and the small decisions and improvements we make every day can create big change. and whilst progress takes time, it begins with all of us
