animal welfare

we believe that having good animal welfare standards is an important part of our business. it is our responsibility to work with suppliers who are also committed to the highest sustainability standards with a focus on constantly looking at ways of improving best practices

all beef, chicken and pork supplied to wagamama must meet strict EU legislation and adhere to the principles of the farm animal welfare council (fawc) five freedoms for animal welfare

eggs at wagamama

at wagamama, we are deeply committed to animal welfare, including our goal of achieving 100% cage-free eggs across both our company-operated and franchised businesses worldwide

while we remain fully dedicated to this goal, we acknowledge that some regions, particularly in asia and the middle east, face unique challenges due to complex supply chains. despite these obstacles, we are making significant progress by working closely with our partners in these markets. our objective is to achieve full cage-free compliance globally as quickly as possible

our progress status is as follows |

  • uk + ireland | achieved 100% cage-free for all shell eggs, liquid eggs, and egg by-products in 2022

  • usa | achieved 100% cage-free for all shell eggs, liquid eggs, and egg by-products in 2024

  • europe | on track to achieve 100% cage-free for shell eggs, liquid eggs, and egg by-products by the end of 2025. current progress | 73% shell, 55% liquid, 74% by-products

  • asia + middle east | no individual market is fully compliant yet. current progress | 17% shell, 17% liquid, 21% by-products. however, new plans are in place to achieve full cage-free compliance for shell eggs, liquid eggs, and egg by-products by the end of 2027

we are proud of the progress we have made globally and, in the spirit of Kaizen, remain steadfast in our commitment to animal welfare

we will publish a further update by june 2025, detailing our progress across all regions and providing a comprehensive roadmap with clear yearly benchmarks for asia and the middle east. this roadmap will outline the specific steps we are taking to achieve our 2027 goal in these regions

additionally, we will continue to share progress updates at the end of each year and annually thereafter, including overall compliance percentages for each market. these updates will continue until we can proudly declare that we have achieved 100% cage-free status globally

salmon at wagamama

sustainability is at the heart of everything we do at wagamama, including how we select, source from and work with our suppliers, which is why all salmon on our menu is sustainably sourced from scottish and norwegian fisheries that operate to the highest standards and do not use feed from west africa

each of the fisheries we source from share our commitment to sustainability and are accredited by GlobalG.A.P. the world’s leading standards for seafood farmed with care. these organisations set strict requirements for responsible seafood farming that require producers to farm with care for fish, the environment and the people on and around the farm

as a responsible brand we regularly ensure that all our suppliers adhere to wagamama’s strict sourcing requirements, we also make sure the highest standards are maintained by conducting routine audits and site visits to verify compliance, traceability and transparency

as part of our desire to source ingredients from the uk where feasible, we have taken the decision to switch the sourcing of all our salmon to scottish fisheries by the end of this year.  these fisheries also have the additional benefit of being RSPCA accredited

at wagamama we live by the japanese philosophy  ‘kaizen’ which means ‘continual improvement’. it inspires us to do better in all that we do, to make small positive choices every day for big change. continual improvement is paramount as we look to constantly expand our sustainability goals and achievements. the part we must play as a brand is extremely important and the small decisions and improvements we make every day can create big change.  and whilst progress takes time, it begins with all of us
